Head Start was founded in 1965 as part of the War on Poverty and is the nation’s largest early childhood education program. Head Start promotes school-readiness and enhances social and cognitive development by providing educational, health, nutritional, social, and other services to enrolled children and families. With an annual budget of $8.6 billion, Head Start serves nearly one million low income children and families each year.

Acelero Learning and Head Start

Acelero Learning improves educational opportunities for young children by working with local partners and community organizations to improve the delivery and quality of local Head Start services. Each Acelero Learning delegate and partner proudly joins the more than 1,700 Head Start grantees across the country who help provide high-quality services to nearly 1 million children and families in need.

Each Acelero Learning program is a member of both its state Head Start association and the National Head Start Association (NHSA), a private not-for-profit membership organization dedicated exclusively to meeting the needs of Head Start children and their families. Acelero Learning sponsors NHSA’s annual conference and works closely with this national body to advocate for more funds for Head Start and Early Head Start programs.
